Promotion of collection and reduction of waste material, reuse, and recycling at stores

DCM is working to reduce its environmental impact by installing collection boxes for used printer ink cartridges, button batteries, and rechargeable batteries at each store, as well as collecting used batteries from customers who have purchased car batteries. In addition, DCM is actively promoting recycling and waste collection activities by providing collection sites such as recycling stations and used clothing collection boxes, as well as through the collection of waste cooking oil. (*Items collected may differ by store)

Examples of initiatives to reduce other waste emissions

A portion of our Hokkaido stores have waste taken from customers and from stores transported to the Kitahiroshima Recycling Center using delivery trucks from logistics centers so that it can be sorted and recycled. This is one of the experimental initiatives we’re engaging in as a sustainable activity tied to waste reductions, and we recycle that waste as firewood for camping that is popular in Hokkaido and for heating, as heating fuel for botanical centers and we also recycle it at disposal companies.

1. 100% recycling

We collect the waste wood pallets, plastic pallets, scrap iron and Styrofoam from our stores, as well as plastic products like those for snow removal from customers when they make a purchase, and we recycle 100% of them.

2. Wood waste used as heating fuel

Approximately 70% of the wood waste we gather is used as heating fuel for our botanical centers.

Used as fuel in boilers

3. Wood recycling

Approximately 30% of the wood waste we gather is sold at our stores as firewood.
